Molybdenum Tube (Mo) – Properties, Advantages and Applications

Molybdenum tubes are high-quality semi-finished metal products made from the refractory transition metal molybdenum (Mo), which has the atomic number 42. They are characterized by high temperature resistance, good mechanical strength and excellent thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, molybdenum tubes are used in numerous industries, particularly in high-temperature technology, vacuum technology, metalworking and plant engineering.

Molybdenum is a silvery-gray metal that is primarily extracted from the mineral molybdenite (MoS₂). Molybdenum tubes can be manufactured in various diameters, wall thicknesses and lengths and are suitable for demanding technical applications.

Properties of Molybdenum Tubes

Molybdenum has a density of approximately 10.22 g/cm³ and a melting point of around 2623 °C. The metal offers high strength at elevated temperatures and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. As a result, molybdenum tubes exhibit good dimensional and shape stability under suitable operating conditions.

Depending on their dimensions and material condition, the tubes can be machined. Molybdenum oxidizes at high temperatures in oxygen-containing atmospheres, which is why a vacuum or protective gas atmosphere is required for many high-temperature applications.

Industrial Uses

Molybdenum tubes are frequently used to manufacture high-temperature components, furnace parts and specialized protective sleeves. In vacuum technology, they serve as structural elements for equipment operated under controlled atmospheres.

In addition, molybdenum tubes are used in the electronics industry, the manufacture of technical components and scientific research facilities. Their high temperature resistance makes them an important material for specialized industrial applications.
