Molybdenum Sheet and Molybdenum Strip (Mo) – Properties, Advantages and Applications

Molybdenum sheets and strips are high-quality semi-finished metal products made from the refractory transition metal molybdenum (Mo), which has the atomic number 42. They are characterized by high temperature resistance, good thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. Due to these properties, they are used in numerous industries, particularly in high-temperature technology, the electronics industry, metalworking and plant engineering.

Molybdenum is a silvery-gray metal that is primarily extracted from the mineral molybdenite (MoS₂). Molybdenum sheets and strips are manufactured in various thicknesses and dimensions and serve as starting materials for demanding technical components.

Properties of Molybdenum Sheet and Molybdenum Strip

Molybdenum has a density of approximately 10.22 g/cm³ and a melting point of around 2623 °C. The metal offers high strength at elevated temperatures and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. This makes molybdenum sheets and strips suitable for applications requiring good dimensional stability under thermal stress.

Depending on their material condition and dimensions, the products can be processed by cutting, stamping, bending and other methods. Molybdenum oxidizes at high temperatures in oxygen-containing atmospheres, which is why a protective gas atmosphere or vacuum is necessary for certain applications.

Industrial Uses

Molybdenum sheets are frequently used to manufacture heat shields, furnace linings and temperature-resistant components. Molybdenum strips are particularly suitable for manufacturing thin components, electrical contacts and specialized structural elements.

In the electronics industry, these semi-finished products are used to manufacture electrodes and other technical components. They are also used in vacuum technology, research and development, and the production of high-temperature equipment.
