Molybdenum Carbide (Mo₂C) – Properties, Advantages and Applications
Molybdenum carbide (Mo₂C) is an inorganic compound of molybdenum and carbon. The usually gray to dark gray powder is characterized by its high hardness, excellent wear resistance and good thermal stability. Due to these properties, molybdenum carbide is one of the technically important hard materials and is used in the tool industry, metalworking, coating technology and the chemical industry.
Molybdenum carbide is produced by reacting molybdenum-containing starting materials with carbon at high temperatures. Its distinctive physical and chemical properties make it a valuable material for demanding industrial applications.
Properties of Molybdenum Carbide
Molybdenum carbide has a molar mass of approximately 203.91 g/mol and a density of around 9.1 to 9.2 g/cm³. The compound is characterized by high hardness, good thermal conductivity and resistance to mechanical wear.
Thanks to its thermal stability, Mo₂C is suitable for applications at elevated temperatures. However, its operating temperature is limited in oxidizing atmospheres, as the material can oxidize when subjected to intense heating.
Molybdenum carbide is frequently used as a component of cemented carbides and wear-resistant coatings. It can improve the mechanical properties and durability of technical materials.
Industrial Uses
In the tool industry, molybdenum carbide is used in the production of cemented carbide tools and cutting tool materials. It contributes to improved hardness, wear resistance and performance.
In coating technology, Mo₂C is used as a component of wear-resistant protective coatings. In addition, molybdenum carbide is studied and used as a catalyst material in the chemical industry, for example in certain hydrogenation and conversion reactions.
Molybdenum carbide also plays an important role in powder metallurgy and the development of modern composite materials.
